What caused the deadly stampede at New Delhi railway station?
According to the RPF report, the stampede was triggered by two conflicting announcements about a Kumbh special train's platform change from 12 to 16. When the second announcement was made, passengers from platforms 12-15 began moving via foot bridges, while passengers from other trains (Magadh Express, Uttar Sampar Kranti, and Prayagraj Express) were moving in the opposite direction. In the resulting chaos on the staircases, some passengers slipped and fell, and were subsequently trampled by the crowds. The timing of the platform change announcement was particularly problematic as it came when personnel were already attempting to manage crowded platforms and foot bridges, leading to 18 fatalities.
