What happened during the plane crash landing in Toronto?

John Nelson was on a flight from Detroit to Toronto when the plane attempted to land in difficult conditions with whipping winds and snow-covered runways. Without any warning from the pilot, the aircraft hit the runway extremely hard, causing it to pop up and lean to the left. The impact was severe enough that the plane appears to have flipped over, as John later mentions being suspended upside down in his seat.
