Putin's Demands

Who will decide when Ukraine peace deal talks between the U.S. and Russia will take place?

According to Putin's aide Yuzhikov, President Putin himself will ultimately decide when talks with the United States regarding the Ukraine peace deal can happen. Following four and a half hours of discussions in Saudi Arabia, Yuzhikov indicated that while conditions for future negotiations have been outlined, the timing remains at Putin's discretion. Yuzhikov also expressed uncertainty about whether the United States and Russian positions are converging, stating that it is 'hard to say if the United States and the Russian positions are getting closer.' This suggests that despite diplomatic engagement, significant differences may still exist between the two nations regarding Ukraine.

Is Trump's potential exit from NATO a realistic threat?

According to Dr. Malcolm Davis, it is a realistic threat. He believes Trump is determined to accommodate Putin's wishes without demanding anything in return. Davis points out that Putin's demands prior to invading Ukraine included NATO's withdrawal from Eastern and Central Europe, blocking Ukraine from joining NATO, and removing security guarantees to Ukraine. These demands are now on the negotiating table, and given Trump's approach of what Davis describes as 'utter capitulation,' a NATO exit appears possible under a potential Trump administration.
